Student Opportunity: Environmental Microbiology Program in Las Vegas 3/9/2012

The UNLV summer Research Experience for Undergraduates in Environmental Microbiology program is now accepting applications. This NSF supported program provides undergraduates with an opportunity to perform independent research under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Students receive a $5,000 salary, round trip airfare, and complimentary housing in a UNLV dormitory. The program dates are June 4 to Aug 10, 2012. Find a list of mentors and the on-line application at http://faculty.unlv.edu/microreu. A complete application includes a one-page statement of interest, transcripts (unofficial are fine), and one letter of recommendation from a scientist. The deadline for applications is Friday March 9, 2012. First generation college students, nontraditional students, members of groups under-represented in science and Post-9/11 veterans are strongly encouraged to apply.

Student Opportunity: Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship

ORNL summer interns work side-by-side with world-class scientists and engineers on cutting edge research. Outside of the lab you’ll have opportunities to interact with other students and scientists during luncheons, brown bag seminars, social activities, and weekend excursions.

The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratories. You must be a US Citizen or PRA enrolled at an accredited institution with a 3.0 GPA or higher and have completed at least one year as a matriculating undergraduate student at the time of applying.

Becker receives Stanford fellowship

HHS institutes new Conflict of Interest policies

The Department of Health and Human Services has announced new policies about the responsibilities of institutions and individual PIs in reporting on and managing financial conflicts of interests. Among the changes are new training requirements and lower financial thresholds for determining conflict of interest. The NIH Office of Extramural Research has put together a table comparing the old and new policies.

Trinity will have to revise its own CoI policies and procedures this fall to comply with the new requirements. Expect some announcements about this to be forthcoming later this fall.
